Case study in Norway
(Northern ToSIA)
Helgeland is a region within the County of Nordland. In the case of Helgeland we want to restrict the analysis on a regional basis.
Due to reorganization of the sawmilling industry in Norway, it is planned that a big sawmill in the region would be closed down.
At present 20 % of all areas in Helgeland is protected. It is planned to increase this protected share up to 40 %.
By the use of ToSIA we want to analyse what would be the consequences for the viability of the region if different scenarios is to be the fact.
The following questions will be put forward:
- How would the timber-industry be influenced by the close down of one big sawmill?
- How would the timber-industry be influenced by an increase in the protection of forested land?
- How would the tourism-industry be influenced by an increase in the protection of forested land?
Related to question 2 and 3 the following hypothesis will be put forward:
Hypothesis: If we increase the protected areas by 20%, the total local value added would increase because of the increase in tourism activities within the region.
Biodiversities issues will be taken in as an aspect at a later stage in the analysis.
